Methodology
Each month's return is measured month-end to month-end on Taiwan's total-return index (TAIEX Total Return, which counts dividends as reinvested rather than as a drop in the index). "Share of up years" is how often that calendar month finished higher, across the years in the sample. "Average volume" is the number of shares traded per day that month, averaged.
The total-return index starts in 2003 — that is about 23 years of history, not 30. Volume starts in 2004 (TWSE normalized series). Historical statistics only, not a forecast.
What this means, and how to use it
Use it to set expectations, not to time trades. A month whose average return is positive across roughly 23 years still contains losing years — the share-of-up-years column is what tells you how consistent that month actually was. A high average with a low up-year share means one or two extreme years are carrying it. Historical statistics, not a forecast.
