Methodology

Every company that left the market is counted in the year its delisting took effect — one row per year, and the figure is simply how many companies that was.

Starts in 2001; the latest year covered is shown as the sample period above. There is no breakdown by reason, because that field is empty for every record in the source, and how long each company had been listed is not included either — both are left out rather than estimated. Historical statistics only, not a forecast.

What this means, and how to use it

This is the size of the survivorship-bias problem in your own backtest. Every company counted here has left the market — if your data source removes delisted tickers, all of these vanish from your history and your strategy only ever sees the companies that made it. That is what makes returns look better than they were. Historical statistics, not a forecast.
