Methodology

Each company-month with a reported year-on-year change is placed in a band and counted. The denominator is the number of observations that HAVE a value, not every company-month that exists. The growth figure is taken from the source as published and is not recomputed here.

Bands cover the whole distribution. Because the denominator is the sample with a value, months where a company reported nothing are absent rather than counted as zero growth — those are different facts and must not be merged.

What this means, and how to use it

Use it as the baseline before calling a number impressive. If a large share of the market posts growth in a given band every month, a company in that band is ordinary, not a standout. It is the reference distribution a single company's figure should be read against. History, not a forecast.
